What the numbers show
When we last checked (30 October 2026), workafro listed 1,173 remote roles that name South Africa as a place you can work from. They came from 188 employers.
That's a lot of choice, but it isn't spread evenly. A small group of employers posted a big share of those roles, and many of them are staffing and talent agencies, not the business you'd end up working for. This guide shows who they are, what they hire for, and what to check before you apply.
Every number here is from 30 October 2026. Jobs open and close every day, so the live list will look different by the time you read this.

Kraken stands out on this list. Its role titles name its own products, such as Kraken Pro and Kraken Consumer, and they're mostly software engineering and product roles, many of them senior.
Further down, you'll find employers with just a few roles each. On 30 October 2026, titles included Case Manager and Client Care Specialist at PJI Law, Grants Associate at African Climate Foundation, Platform Tech Lead at Yellow Card and Product Designer at Sendmarc. Don't skip the smaller names. Fewer roles can mean fewer applicants.
Which kinds of roles

- Finance: 75 roles
- Operations: 74 roles

Another 181 roles sat in our Other group.
If you're early in your career, there's room for you. Of the 1,173 roles naming South Africa, 289 carried our Entry level tag. That's about one in four. Our guide to entry-level remote jobs in Africa explains how to stand out without years of experience.
What agencies mean for you
Pavago, Huzzle and Hire Hangar are remote staffing and talent agencies. Judging by their role titles, several others near the top also hire for different client businesses. For example, Assist World's titles include an executive assistant for a psychology practice and a coordinator for an aesthetics clinic.
When you apply through an agency, it usually works like this:
- The agency screens you and places you with one of its clients.
- You do the day-to-day work for that client.
- Your contract may be with the agency, and the agency may be the one that pays you.
That isn't a bad thing. Agencies can open doors to businesses that don't hire in South Africa on their own. But read the details before you sign:
- Who is your contract with? The agency or the client?
- Are you an employee or a contractor? It changes your tax, leave and notice. Our guide to contractor or employee explains the difference.
- Who pays you, how, and when? Get the currency, the payment method and the pay date in writing.
- Which hours? Some titles ask for US, UK or Australian hours, or weekend shifts. Make sure the schedule works for you.
Roles open across Africa, EMEA and worldwide
The 1,173 roles above name South Africa directly. They're not your only option. On 30 October 2026, workafro also listed 447 roles open across Africa, across EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) or worldwide. People in South Africa can apply for these too.
Read who can apply before you start. A role marked worldwide can still have limits on time zones or on the countries where the employer can pay people. Our guides to EMEA remote jobs from Africa and what worldwide remote really means cover the fine print.
How to apply and stay safe
- Never pay to apply. A real employer or agency won't ask you for money to get a job, for training or for a placement. If anyone does, walk away.
- Apply on the employer's own page. Every Apply button on workafro goes to the employer's own job page. Don't send your CV to a WhatsApp number or a personal email address that claims to speak for a company.
- Read who can apply. Check the country, the hours and the contract type in the listing before you spend time on an application.
- Tailor your CV. Use the words from the job ad where they truly describe you. Our guide to a remote CV for African applicants shows how.
- Check any offer. Our guide to remote job scams in Africa lists the warning signs.
