Remote offer or local job? See the money left each month

Type both offers in your own money. You'll see what each one leaves at the end of the month, after the costs that a bare salary figure hides.

The remote offer

Your own figure. See the tax guides below.

The local job

Lunch or work clothes, for example.

A worked example, with made-up numbers

A remote offer of 1,000 USD at a rate of 130 is 130,000 a month. A 3% fee takes 3,900. Setting aside 15% for tax takes 19,500. Internet is 6,000 and power is 3,000. That leaves 97,600.

A local job paying 70,000 net, less 10,000 for transport, leaves 60,000. So the remote offer leaves 37,600 more in this example. Your own numbers may say the opposite.

What this doesn't count

This compares money only. A contractor often gets no paid leave or pension from the payer, and pay can stop at short notice. Read contractor or employee before you decide.

The tax box is yours to fill in. Our guides show how it works in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia and other countries. Need a figure for the power box? Use the power backup calculator to size what you'd buy. Then see the remote roles open to you.

Questions people ask

Should I take a remote job or a local job?

This tool only shows the money left each month. Also look at how steady the work is, paid leave, pension and how much you'd learn.

What should I type for tax?

Use the share you'd really set aside. If you aren't sure, read the guide for your country and ask your tax authority or an adviser.

This is an estimate, not tax or legal advice. The tax you type is your own figure. Reviewed on 2 November 2026.
